Online retail sales recruitment August's biggest fall

Online appointments decreased last month for the fifth time in the last half-year, with retail sales recruitment taking the largest fall, new research shows.

The Monster Employment Index UK fell by seven points in August, with demand for the retail sales recruitment sector dropping sharply.

Head of economic research at Monster Worldwide Hugo Sellert claims this shows an increase in the number of job seekers searching for work.

Saying the balance has shifted in the employers favour, he states the results show industries are scaling back on recruiting.

"The recent decline in the index shows jobs are now getting harder to come by," he adds.

Some sectors saw a better result than retail sales recruitment, with hiring rises in public-sector and community work, as well as in healthcare.

Earlier this month, a survey conducted by KPMG found a drop in the overall number of available vacancies.

Its director Alan Nolan attributed this to companies wanting to keep their payrolls low.
