Retail sales bolstered by online performance
Online sales of clothing, footwear and other retail items have risen by 21 per cent year-on-year in April, according to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
Chris Webster, vice president of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said that the index results were down to more retailers using online means to retain customers and attract others, which could interest companies using sales recruitment.
"The clothing sector in particular has been given a boost by April's early signs of summer, with shoppers logging on to update their wardrobes for the new season. This sector is driving growth behind the industry as a whole," he said.
April saw British consumers spend £4.4 billion online, which means that retail sales increased by 13 per cent in the same month.
The positive figures were backed by the CBI's recent Distributive Trades Survey, which revealed that 46 per cent of retailers reported sales volumes in early April which were higher than during the same period last year.
